World of Warcraft has had a lot of events, expansions, patches, and updates that have featured many game-changing entities. And with the game having been around for some long, it’s important that they remember some of the things that made World of Warcraft so special in regards to lore. Thus is the case today, where the game remembers the events of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj.
This was a war that happened on January 23rd, 2006, almost 11 years ago today. A war that lasted 10-hours in a single battle, but would shake the foundation for years to come.
Though as they note, the battle itself wasn’t a surprise. For the menace of C’Thun turned into an urgent threat, leaders across the world pored over plans and forged unlikely connections as pressure mounted. Both factions knew war was coming and personal glory was a hubris no-one could risk. Any notion that one army could defeat General Rajaxx and his colossal battalion was soon abandoned as fantasy. As they say, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” And stand they did, and fall they did.
So why remember this now? Well, as the team at Blizzard notes, the timing of this is very poignant (and maybe for reasons outside World of Warcraft as well), as the world of Azeroth is being shaken to its core by the threat of the Burning Legion. Now is a time for unity across all races and factions, for no one warrior, or group, or guild, or faction, can stand up to this threat alone.
So remember the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj, remember what had to happen when the enemy was upon you, and let’s see if we can do that again. Also, players are asked to join in the Call of the Scarab event from today until the 23rd, so that you can all pay homage to those that were lost in that epic battle.
