It might seem like a bit of an age-old question to some, but there is a number of fans holding out the hope that World of Warcraft could make its way onto home consoles. This is something playing on Ocalus’ mind, and given how passionate the WoW community can be on such subjects, a cautious approach was taken to avoid conjuring up the usual storm of PC versus console.
Such an established franchise making the crossover to console format would certainly be a huge transition, which many consider to be too much of one for it to ever come to fruition. There are many factors that come in to play, some of which cited by Johnwanne:
I wouldn’t imagine a controller would support the game very well, and if you’re plugging in a keyboard & mouse it’d defeat the point on being on there in the first place. Then you’ve also got player retention to consider – introducing the game this late after multiple expansions and monetisation methods, players there might not be as accepting of it as ourselves who have been used to it for ages.
It’s worth taking into account that the introduction to consoles would see a potentially massive spike in players, but the mountain to climb to make the idea possible might be too much of a stretch for the sake of a spike in its player base.
Optimization / possible performance issues aside, I think it’d be weird to bring it to console at this point because there would be many expansions worth of content that wouldn’t seem all that important compared to the current legion content.
World of Warcraft coming to consoles would be massive, whether or not Blizzard would explore this option is another matter, having to consider optimization, gameplay and negotiations with the likes of Sony and Microsoft going forward to make it happen.
