It’s one thing to release a game and hope it’ll be well received, but it’s another thing to try and keep interest going for your title by bringing in new content. Whether it’s DLC or expansions, if it’s not good, your game will suffer. Thankfully for the team at Digital Extremes, their recent expansion for their free-to-play title, Warframe was not only a hit, it was a mega-hit. It’s broken records, and it’s still growing, which is definitely what any game developer wants to hear.
So, how good is it doing exactly? Well, the expansion hit PC on the 12th, and during that gap from then to now, the game has hit over 121,000+ players on Steam. Which is a record for the MMO. What’s more, that’s pretty much double the highpoint it got last time, which was around 69,000+ players during the Octavia’s Anthem content release. So yeah, that’s pretty big. But that’s not all it did.
In terms of Steam rankings, it’s #4 on the “Top Games” list, and because of the spike in concurrent players, it’s now the 2nd highest concurrent player peak for a free-to-play MMORPG. And in potential, the success of Warframe and Plains of Eidolon can continue to grow, as the console version of the game will release on Xbox One and PS4 later this year, and theoretically, it’ll be just as popular there.
Speaking of popular Digital Extremes also noted in a press release that since its launch in 2013, Warframe has amassed 30 million registered players, which is a pretty substantial amount all things considered. And fans can’t help but rave about the game. They’re consistently calling it one of the best MMORPGs on the market, and even being used as a reference for what certain titles (like Destiny 2…) should look at to mimic and improve upon.
