Warframe Passive and What Can be Done About Chromas

Warframe is a relatively popular third-person-shooter from Digital Extremes that has been in beta since 2013. Since the game’s release, Digital Extremes has been buffing, nerfing, tweaking, and balancing every element of the game as referenced in my previous post. Once again, players have spoken up about an aspect of the game they feel that could use reworking – this time through a reddit post.

The post describes the OP’s desire for the Warframe Chroma’s passive ability to be altered, especially after the recent release of Octavia. Essentially, the argument is as follows: since Octavia has a passive and her Mandachord, Chroma should get a new passive while retaining the power of his old one. For those who might not know these passives off hand let me break them down for you.

Octavia’s passive: “Briefly replenishes energy for Octavia and nearby allies when abilities are activated.”

Along with her Mandachord, which allows players to make music and buff themselves and allies by performing actions to the beat, this makes Octavia a valuable addition to any team. The argument is that in order to make Chroma equally as viable, his current passive should be alongside something entirely new.

Chroma’s current passive: “Chosen Energy color dictates the type of Elemental Damage dealt by abilities.”

Chroma’s passive sounds pretty cool, but in practice, it is definitely less so. Many players were hoping for a rework of his skills after the release of his new skin, but one never came. However, the OP has come up with a pretty cool idea in order to make Chroma worthwhile. Taking a page from Octavia’s book, Chroma’s current passive could be made into a toggle-able skill. Pressing a key could switch the elemental damage he does quickly and easily instead of having to go into the arsenal and switch your load-out every other mission. One commenter on the post lends their idea to the OP, stating that if the toggle-able skill was implemented, Chroma’s new passive could be an increase in elemental proc damage. Obviously, this rework would need some fine-tuning from the devs, but it might turn some players onto the idea of using the frame.

What do you think? Do you play Chroma? Would you if these changes were implemented? What frame do you think needs a rework the most?

  1. the person who wrote thos article must be like mastery rank 2 or some bullshit or new to the fucking game because chromas passive is awsome

    • Hello! MR 18 (19 if I’d get around to taking the dang test… not that it matters), been playing for 2 years, this article is about a reddit post someone else posted and I just covered it. The cool thing about Warframe is that everyone has their own opinions on what’s good and what’s bad and everyone builds a frame differently.

  2. seriously who is writing all this crap …some new player that dont know damn thing about the game?

    • Like I said to the other guy, I’ve been playing for 2 years and I’m MR 18 but anyone I talk to who’s been playing for longer than like, 6 months, tells me MR couldn’t mean less. And again like I said to the other guy, Warframe is a cool game because everyone has a different opinion on frames and weapons. The reddit post I reference in this article is the source of most of these opinions and suggestions. Another commenter right below you totally agrees with it though! THAT is why Warframe is awesome.

  3. There are worse passives out there. Rhino, Trinity, Titania, Mag, etc.

And there’s Frames with worse set ups than Chroma. Oberon, anyone?

Let DE focus on the bigger issues before dealing with a passive. Is it shit? Of course. Is it the worst? Not by a long shot.

  4. Chroma is great, but the passive is trash. I’d rather see like a special ability according to the element that you chose.
    Fire: health regen
    Electric: increased shield recharge
    Toxin: faster attack speed
Ice: slower health regen but wits slightly higher armor

    • That’s a great idea too! There’s plenty of ways DE could work around him while maintaining the overall elemental feel of Chroma.

    • I mean, that is sort of what Chromas Elemental Ward does already…
      Fire: 200% – 700% Health buff
      Electric: 100% – 350% Extra Shields
      Toxin: 35% – 98.7% Faster Reload Speed
      Cold: 150% – 500% Extra Armor
So, Chroma does feel strong and fun with his current power set and that “passive” but, in my opinion, the “passive” does not feel very passive at all. You have to adjust your energy color and then also use your abilities to actually see the “passive” at work. I would much rather get something that happens for the frame naturally, like maybe on going down his pelt pushes away enemies with air or something.

  5. Honestly, out of all the little things that need tweaking with this game, archwing stability, water maps, grinding and drop percentages, and conclave to name a few, that would take it into an outstanding new direction, reworking an ability, that is pretty good as it is, should be the least of DE’s concerns.

But, if you want a rework that fits the game lore then you need to remember, Chroma is A FREAKING DRAGON! Make his ability do ‘scaling’ (no pun) damage, healing, armor, buffs, whatever so he will always be feared by the enemy. If you have a warframe that gets stronger as the enemies get stronger, you have a warframe that will draw crowds.

  6. I like the idea of his passive to toggle elements but then again DE would see it as being ” OP ” If it did happen Chroma would become a power house. I also agree that most of his skills needs a rework except effigy

  7. THANK YOU ASHLEY!! Ignore those two. I understand what you are trying to say. Like why is his regular ability a passive??? thats like saying trinity’s “passive is heals other war frames while using abilities??? I totally get it. I think the extra damage or proc chance on weapons would be nice (but i know that would be OP) but hey i love chroma. I love him just the way he is. But i wouldn’t mind a change to make him more of an actual support character if that is what we choose. I think they should should just buff his range of his passives would be better. What do you think?

    • I think the proc would probably be too OP as well, but I would love to see his current passive become toggle-able. Balancing is always a challenge with frames. Balance them too much, and nobody will play them. Balance them too little and EVERYONE is going to play them. I have faith that DE can work it out.
