When it comes to making video games, there’s one big question you have to answer pretty much off the bat: What game engine will you use? Because although the idea of the game you want to make is important, if your game engine can’t do it, you’re in trouble. Thankfully, over the years a whole host of game engines have popped up for both mainstream and indie developers to use. But easily one of the best ones is the Unreal Engine. This engine shocked the world since it debuted, and each new version of it just makes gaming advance even further. As proved by its latest update in Unreal Engine 4.16.
This is a major update to the engine, and promises lots of improvements that you’ll be able to truly see in the game. For example, there are a set of new rendering features to help build the graphical quality, as well as new animation tweaks that’ll make the motions of your characters or objects more refined. Or, if performance when being played is your major goal, Unreal Engine 4.16 has boosts there too. As if all of that isn’t enough, the team has even refined how you can use the system to ensure that you get the absolute most out of your game without you feeling overwhelmed or confused by the engine.
An interesting addition for sure though is the new ability to create Volumetric Fog in the games you make. This will allow you to make even deeper environments, not to mention have more fun with your players.
Oh, and if you’re looking to make video games for the Nintendo Switch? Then Unreal Engine 4.16 is the update you need, because the source code for the new console has been included for free to approved developers.
