Should There Be more Third-Person MOBAs?

When you look at it, MOBAs are probably the most popular genre on the market right now, and games like League of Legends and Dota 2 can prove that with their enormous and stable player bases. But if you’re a game developer that wants to make a MOBA of your own, then you need to bring something new and exciting to the MOBA formula, like making a third-person MOBA. Well, there have been some games like that, Smite, Paragon, and Gigantic for example, but should there be more third-person MOBAs out there?

Third-person MOBAs

There’s an exciting element to these types of MOBA games, as making it third-person really brings you closer to the action, the carnage, and the excitement. Looking from a bird’s perspective is fine, but the third-person point of view is just more thrilling no matter how you look at it, but there are merits to both of these POVs. Even though Smite launched way back in 2014, it never really got its time in the spotlight, and that’s because all MOBA games have two common enemies, and those are League of Legends and Dota 2. LoL is a game that you can get the hang of quite easily, and it’s mechanics are easy to learn but hard to master, making it perfect for both casual and hardcore gamers. While Dota 2, on the other hand, is this gigantic sea of mechanics, items, game knowledge, micromanaging, and so on, and it’s a game where you need a lot of time just to understand the basics. But it’s a MOBA with a lot of complexity and that’s why it has a fanbase which will probably never disappear.

Third-person MOBAs

Third-person MOBAs have some differences from your regular MOBA games, like the autoattacks which are usually skillshots and you have to aim them. This isn’t the case in top-down MOBAs where you press the autoattack button and your character attacks on his own, and this kind of increases the skill requirement of these games, as it makes farming and harassing the opponents a tad bit harder. Keeping an eye on your surroundings is also harder in these games, as you’re seeing everything that’s in front of your character, but for example, in League of Legends you are looking from above, so you can spot any approaching threat if you’re careful enough.

Third-person MOBAs

We would be happy to see a third-person MOBA get as big as some of the MOBA titans of today, but we still have to wait for that day to come, and it doesn’t seem to be coming anytime soon.
