Star Wars Needs An MMORPG That’s Official Canon

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a new story was told that captured the minds of millions, and to this day, continues to capture them. The movies started it, then books, then video games, then a duo of animated series, all have helped make it grand. Yet, for video games, there’s one key drawback, many of them are considered “non-canon”, and by “many”, we mean pretty much all of them. The one exception being the upcoming Battlefront 2, which has a story which is made to be canon.

But, for some, including us here at MMOExaminer, we think that the people at Disney/Lucasfilm can take this a step further, what if they did a canon game…set within an MMORPG? You might be thinking, “Aren’t they doing that in Star Wars: The Old Republic?”

Well…yes and no, they’re trying to do something meaningful with the game, but, whether it’s canon or not is up for debate. Not to mention, because this takes place in the “Old Republic” universe, which is set long before the original movies, would it even matter if it was canon?

Star Wars: The Old Republic

What should be made is a canon MMORPG that is set between Episode 01 and Episode 09. Somewhere in there anyway. Doesn’t have to span all nine episodes, just give us a place where we can help write the history.

It’s not as insane as you think. When Episode VII was announced, Disney/Lucasfilm literally rewrote history and dictated what was canon and what wasn’t. Outside of the movies, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels were deemed canon. Add to that a plethora of new books to help “fill in gaps” and that’s a lot of canon events taking place outside of the movies. So, why not give video games a try?

Yes, we acknowledge it would be a struggle to keep it relevant, and to keep it meaningful to players to truly feel that they’re having an impact on the universe, but if it works? This could be something truly transcendent, and that allow is worth someone looking into making it.
