Sonic The Hedgehog is aiming to do something it hasn’t done in quite some time, have two well-received games in a year. Recently, Sonica Mania was released, and fans and critics went nuts over the old-school gameplay, look, feel, and just plain fun of the game. But now, it’s the Sonic team’s turn to really dial it up to 11 with Sonic Forces. This game will feature Sonic going up against not only Eggman, but also every single major enemy he’s ever faced before. But at least he won’t be doing it alone.
On his side he’ll have his old-school form, but also a character-created character. This was a surprise when it was announced, as this has never been done in Sonic games. And this has created some concern among players over how “powerful” this character would be in comparison to the two Sonics. Well, at the Tokyo Game Show, Sonic Forces Producer Shun Nakamura talked about what the character creations would be like, and what it wouldn’t be like.
“What the team wanted to have people do is create a regular character that exists in the world and have that character go on this great adventure with classic and modern Sonic and become a hero,” Nakamura said.
He went on to note that your character will not be as powerful as Sonic, either of them. At least, not at first, as that would defeat the purpose of having them. After all, they’re meant to be a “random” person in the city you’re in who decides to help you fight Eggman. It’s unreasonable to think that they would be Sonic tier.
As for how deep the character creator mode is, it won’t be the deepest thing you’ve ever seen, but you’ll still be able to create a special character that you’ll like, with characteristics and style that fit who you are and who you want them to be.
Sonic Forces is due for release on September 7th.
