Collectible Card Games (CCGs) are all the rage right now with a lot of big franchises catching on and old CCG greats capitalizing on the new technology. SolForge by Stone Blade Entertainment stands on the shoulders of the creators of two very familiar names you could typically hear in one of the dorm rooms at university: Ascension and Magic: The Gathering. The game pits two players against each other in a battle to whittle down each other’s health using creatures and spells found in the cards.
Complimenting the robust battle system comes the Raiders Unchained Expansion, which allows for more strategic plays in the face of battle and grants two new mechanics to the game: the Raid ability and the Formation ability. These abilities are activated when certain conditions are met, such as selected cards played in tandem, and can offer different roads to victory or defeat.
Raid focuses on the offensive aspect, activating at the end of the turn and only if the player has three or more creatures that participated in battle. Raid can deliver destruction and debilitation to the opposing field.
The Formation ability takes advantage of defensive tactics and gives way to strategies more about control, countering and shut-downs.
As all strategies go, either play requires opportunistic management, as in knowing when and how to capitalize on different situations. Build your deck effectively in order to draw up good combinations and keep the tide of the battle in your favor.
