A major Tekken 7 event was held in The Philippines this past weekend, and saw quite the upset take place. South Korean master Jin-woo “Saint” Choi entered the Rage Art tournament in Makati after competing at Combo Breaker in the United States previously.
However, the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2016 winner met an unlikely match against Filipino competitor Andreij “Doujin” Albar. Well regarded among peers in his community, Doujin entered the competition in the losers bracket, and it would appear at the time that he was unlucky to be drawn against Saint in the first place.
The first set saw both players opting for Jack-7, a move that would prove to be the cause of an early setback for Doujin, who couldn’t take advantage of the hometown support and dropped the first game to Saint.
Undeterred, Doujin selected Kazumi Mishima as his character of choice, which led to a rather convincing victory in the next three rounds. Despite Saint’s decision to swap to Dragunov, he couldn’t topple Doujin’s momentum. Even by switching to Eddy Gordo, a character that is often the bane of many Tekken players, Saint found himself on the wrong end of a beating by an unknown player on the world stage. This wasn’t aided by the fact that Eddy Gordo is a heavily played character in the Philippines, leaving Doujin with plenty of familiarity on how to deal with him.
