I Am Setsuna is a turn-based JRPG inspired by one of the greatest games in JRPG history Chrono Trigger. Made by Tokyo RPG Factory, a new studio within Square Enix, the game is meant to be a callback to the old JRPG ways while also making something new.
The game has done well upon release and has been brought to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC. The developers are currently working on porting the game to the Nintendo Switch with the release date set for March 3.
The game is still growing and as the team revealed on Steam, it has now a French language setting, allowing even more players to fully enjoy it.
What is this game about, you may ask? I Am Setsuna tells a story about a young woman named Setsuna and her incredible inner strength, as well as the sacrifice she must make to save her people. There is a tradition on her hometown which demands that once every ten years, a sacrifice is made to a fiend that resides further in the island.
In Setsuna’s case, she was offered as a sacrifice before the custom was meant to happen. The fiend had become violent and so her people offered Setsuna because of her powers of enchantment. Now, she must journey far away to fulfill her duties as a sacrifice and save her people from a doomed fate.
The game received much praise since its release, so much so that Tokyo RPG Factory made a video detailing the accolades of I Am Setsuna.
Aside from a great story, I Am Setsuna is an homage to JRPG masterpieces of yesteryear. Yet, it uses the current potential of consoles and PC to create an intricate experience. For those who love the old-school way of battling in RPGs, the game has a battle system inspired by Chrono Trigger.
