For those players looking to get into the vast open world of game design, there are numerous ways to start, but perhaps none as user friendly as RPG Maker. This game/engine hybrid takes the complexities of game design and limits them to a few drag and drop options. While this isn’t without its caveats, it is a great way to start learning how to think like a designer. RPG Maker Fes, the newest version of this tool is now available on the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles.

This version of the game exists separately from RPG Maker Player, a Nintendo 3DS application that will allow players to download games made by their peers. It’s a great launching pad into a career in level design and storytelling.

RPG Maker VX Ace is already available on PC via Steam. RPG Maker Fes will allow players to utilize the touch screen to create efficient maps with speed. The customization is unlimited and will allow for numerous styles of games.

By default, RPG Maker offers a rather traditional turn-based combat system, the likes of which could be most commonly associated with Dragon Quest or Mother. While in the overworld, players will experience similar top-down exploration to the Final Fantasy and Pokemons of the world.
