Riot Reveals League of Legends Runes Reforged

While Riot has been saying for some time now that they would be updating the Runes, Masteries, and Honor system in their MOBA League of Legends, the developers were spending a lot of their time and energy on the new client. That change has been live for a little while now, and Riot released a video today where product lead and Senior Producer New001 detailed what the team has in store.

League of Legends Runes Reforged

The rune system in League of Legends can look forward to a total overhaul. Gone will be the days when players purchase dozens of incremental runes that give small increases to stats. Now, the major focus will be the given Keystone rune for any build. These are the center of the new style of rune builds, and will grant powerful bonuses and abilities in games.

There will also be major and minor runes with lesser powers that still grant unique effects for champions using them. The example given in the video is Overheal, where any healing done on a champion beyond their max health will grant a bonus shield.

Perhaps the biggest news for this system is that the development team listened to many of the complaints about the cost of current runes. As such, it’ll be open bar on new runes. The goal, aside from alleviating concerns from their community, is for players to be able to experiment more frequently with different rune builds. New001 also mentions that there will be some form of compensation for players who have already spend countless IP on runes and rune pages. According to him, those players will be “taken care of.”

But before any of this happens, the development team is shooting for a global release of their new Honor system along with version 7.13. The new system will feature a much more present system for recognizing one teammate for their performance in game. Key fragments will become a reward for earning honor, and players with higher honor levels are even being promised exclusive content.

Of course, there’s plenty more details in the full video. Be sure to check it out, and stay tuned, as New001 promises plenty more updates within the week.
