The term “unplayable” has a lot of different meaning depending on the video game it’s being set in. For example, it could mean that the game is so bad it’s not worth playing. Or that the character is so broken that playing them is not an option. Or, in the case of Overwatch, it means that there’s no point to playing them because there’s no chance of winning. That’s what some fans are crying foul about for the character Reaper, who has apparently been put into an unwinnable situation.
This comes from player Kalkz on Battle.net, who for the record isn’t saying that Reaper himself is broken. His moves are fine, his stats are fine, Kalkz even notes he plays great. But the problem comes in when you consider that every Overwatch character (or most all of them) have a counter, meaning a character that can cancel out Reaper’s skills if handled right. Well, all of Reaper’s counters have gotten buffs in the latest patch. And he’s not happy about it:
“My question to the devs is, do you expect reaper to be playable, After BUFFING every single counter for him in your game?”
This is a problem for sure, especially when you realize that some of Reaper’s counters (Pharah, Soldier 76, Roadhog, etc.) are some of the most popular Overwatch characters to play as. And in the case of Pharah, there’s basically one of her in every match. So what good is playing Reaper if you know there’s an opponent out there ready to counter you at the drop of a hat?
Again, Reaper himself is not the problem, it’s that his counters are too much to make you want to play as him, and others are happy this is getting voiced:
“I’m glad someone finally acknowledges his issues. reaper is fine, his counters are just way too powerful atm,” notes thebluehydra.
So what is the solution? Well, the obvious one is to nerf those who counter Reaper, but it’s not that simple, as that could hurt other characters. And buffing Reaper could cause more problems than it solves. What do you think should happen?
