Recently, we here at MMOExaminer talked about how “Toxicity In Gaming Should Be Dealt With More Harshly”, and we truly meant that statement, as toxicity is truly making gaming not fun for many. One of the groups we noted in that piece was Overwatch players. For some reason, this group of gamers has some of the most toxic-minded people in gaming, it’s honestly unknown as to why. But every day it seems, people are talking about what other players are doing, and today is no different.
This is the story of Redditor voltari, who was just trying to enjoy Season 06 of Overwatch’s Competitive Play, when something bad happened. You see, voltari is gay, and both he and his boyfriend play Overwatch together. In fact, they’ve been playing since beta with no significant issues (outside of quality at times). But then, when they decided to play together one day, and were put on the same team, the toxicity arose.
For 3-4 matches, every single one of voltari’s teammates (different from match to match) started to make fun of his boyfriend. Mainly because he has a high-pitched voice that rang clear through voice chat. So, they started to make fun of him because of it. They tried to endure it, they’re just being “funny”, right? Except, then those people starting doing gay slurs.
And by “doing gay slurs” we mean some pretty bad stuff, stuff that NO ONE should ever say, or even ask funnily. Cause it’s not funny. At all.
So what happened? Well, this dedicated Overwatch player, and his boyfriend, both decided to leave the game for good. They don’t want any part of a community that can be that hateful.
Now, I’m sure some people (including some on that Reddit post) will be like, “Well that’s an overreaction! People are always going to be jerks.” That’s the thing though not everyone is like that. Nor should anyone be that, regardless of whether it’s voice chat, text, or some other medium. These two just wanted to enjoy playing a game together, and now, a game that they truly loved has become a tainted memory, and that’s not cool.
