Its the time of year where love is in the air, and its even spread into the massively popular Blizzard shooter Overwatch. There have been hints before suggesting a relationship between Genji and Mercy, and recent datamining efforts could further prove that something romantic is going on among the two.
We’ve already seen from the animated short “Dragons” that Mercy nurses Genji back to health following a near-fatal scrap with his brother Hanzo. The Overwatch Christmas comic also saw Genji and Mercy exchanging letters to each, further fanning the flames of love in-universe. More recently, datamining has found a voice clip between the two, suggesting that Genji and Mercy exchanging some chocolates, which has even led fans to believe there may be some sort of Valentine’s seasonal event akin to the Halloween and Christmas events from last year. You can listen to the sound clip below.
In turn, this was cause for debate on whether they should indeed be together on the Overwatch forums, starting off with an excerpt from a post by FukikoRose:
I really think it would be super weird if they were dating/engaged/married because Mercy was the one who reconstructed Genji’s body, and presumably, he was a long-term patient for such severe full body injuries. As someone who actually has needed long-term treatment from a specialist doctor… It’s just super weird to think that they would be romantically involved in any capacity. There’s a huge difference in power dynamics in the relationship, and I honestly don’t know of any credible or ethical doctor who would ever be romantically involved with one of their patients.
There was a mixed bag of responses that followed, including this from DEMOHARDT:
This was a procedure of: Take in a stranger, heal to life or help recover. We don’t know who built the body, all we know is Mercy discovered and healed him in some sort of way. For him to flirt with her or try to get to know her better during his healing process or just walking around casually does not seem obscene.
Meanwhile, Masteroffire argued:
Mercy isn’t treating genji anymore, so they could probably seek a relationship outside of work, thus making it ethical for Yall.
Personally, I think the thread is a victim of mass overthinking, but its still fun to debate such things. I for one am a firm supporter in “Gency”, and look forward to seeing if Blizzard take the story any further.
