Tim Kilpin, Activision Blizzard’s CEO and president has revealed that Overwatch is performing well on a daily basis, with players spending an average of two hours a day in the popular shooter.
Kilpin had a number of impressive stats that he was able to boast about, with the game rising to fame since its release back in 2016. Since then, we have seen the game introduce new heroes, new maps, game modes and other content with several free updates. This has led to millions of players flocking to the game and actively participating across all platforms, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Kiplin believes that it could have a lot to do with the free content as to why we see so many players playing the game daily, even if it’s only for a couple of hours at a time:
“Because of the way our audience has evolved digitally, and the level of engagement with these franchises, now they’ll play the game for hours upon hours upon hours and go back into it for the seasonal content, downloadable content, microtransactions. They are living inside that ecosystem for years, and just today Overwatch players are playing an average of two hours a day.”
Another way that Overwatch has managed to engage its audience is through animated storytelling such as the short stories we see for heroes. This method gives fans a new way to engage with the game, and ultimately be introduced to content in a new way.
With these factors in mind, it’s easy to see why there has been such an impressive amount of players coming into Overwatch and spending so much time on it daily.
