We often find ourselves reporting on changes being made to Overwatch. Whether its hero alterations, bug fixes or anything in between, the team behind the game are constantly working hard on bringing the fanbase the best possible product.
What is important to remember is that it is a team effort. There may well be a captain of the ship who’s doing all the steering, but ultimately there is an entire team that should be recognised for better or for worse. Its easy to make a scapegoat out of whoever is leading the charge, and this rings true in many things in life, even outside of video games.
In this particular instance, Blizzard VP and Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan’s name is often uttered when players find issues with the game. Whilst as mentioned before its understandable to look to the top for the source of the problem, it is completely misplaced. Kaplan’s presence in the community showcases his passion for the game, and is something that isn’t found in a lot of games that are as big as Overwatch.
Besides the fact that its a team effort, one player has made another point that will hopefully deter fans laying into just one person all the time. Battle.net user Destian feels that Overwatch could be doomed to repeat history should such linear criticism continue, citing the departure of Greg Street from World of Warcraft:
Greg Street was WoW’s lead systems designer for years, until WoW players blaming him for literally every single gripe they had convinced him that he could have a more fulfilling career elsewhere (as well as another job offer), so he left. After he left, WoW took a massive plunge into awfulness.
The post continues to rightfully state that the game is in a very solid state. The team should be held to high standards for sure, but the last thing we need is any potential fall out that could affect the game. The statement of World of Warcraft descending into “awfulness” is completely subjective, of course. But the fact remains that one person isn’t solely responsible for Overwatch’s misgivings.
I feel Kaplan is doing an outstanding job with the game, and hopefully continues to do so. Do you believe that Blizzard are doing a good job with Overwatch? Let us know in the comments below.
