Ever since Mercy was overhauled by Blizzard in Overwatch recently, there has come a common theme in which many players are finding the support hero to be far too overpowered in comparison to the other heroes of that category.
This issue was raised on the official Overwatch forums recently, with a pretty balanced argument for and against her recent buffing. To summarize greyleopardd’s original post, the counter-argument is that because of Mercy’s popularity, she is overused but not actually overpowered. The post also argues that prior to Mercy’s patch, there were few complaints regarding any of the other healers being too weak in comparison.
Having said that, as Mitrovarr argues, there are some pretty impressive statistics in favor of the fellow healers:
Zenyatta has one of the best winrates in the game and a completely decent pickrate. Lucio was consistently one of the most picked heroes in the game in the pro circuit, and was fine outside of that. Old Mercy was the most played hero in the game before her update, and had a completely decent winrate, too.
From Ana’s perspective, you could argue that she was overly nerfed a while back. But as for new Mercy, she is now strong in more aspects of the game, even outside of the support role. It’s unlikely, given her popularity, that she will be nerfed much, if at all. The balance does seem to have shifted slightly in Mercy’s favor, it just leaves the question of whether it’s too much compared to what the other healers have to offer.
