Blizzard is getting set to host some very big Overwatch events in the near future. During the upcoming BlizzCon they’ll be having the World Cups for the game, and soon, the Overwatch League is going to start, and that’ll draw the attention of the entire world in a totally different way. Blizzard has slowly been revealing the teams that are to fill up this league. One of them was the Seoul Dynasty representing South Korea, and today, we got one from the USA.
Behold, the New York Excelsior! Yes, EXCELSIOR!!! Anyway, while this may sound odd for a team in Overwatch, it’s actually quite appropriate. The word in Latin apparently means “Ever Upward, which is likely what the team wants to do in the League, to keep going up. You could also say it’s a way to honor legendary comic book writer and creator Stan Lee, who helped make Marvel what it is…and Marvel is in New York.
As you can see above, the flag logo for the Excelsior is very special and is apparently meant to represent what New York is all about, people and ideas coming together. Their nickname in the tournament will be “NYXL”, which just seems appropriate, don’t you think?
The team is owned by Sterling VC, and it’s going to be interesting to see what these players do when the Overwatch League truly begins. And you can expect more teams to be announced soon as everything starts to fall into place.
Blizzard isn’t stopping there, for they want this experience to be beneficial to both the people playing, and the people watch. So, they’re going to be doing updates to the game and the tournaments to ensure a more pleasurable viewing experience. And you can expect these improvements to start during the World Cup at Blizzcon.
