Everybody’s favorite blue blur will be making a grand retro return to gaming this August, and what better way to celebrate the release of Sonic Mania than with artwork of the new game designed by the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Eggman character designer Naoto Ohshima. His artwork can be found below.
Developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games after their work in the Sonic fan game community, and published by Sega, Sonic Mania presents the return to the classic format which skyrocketed the franchise to fame back in the early 1990s. Produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Mania takes the inspiration from the original trilogy of games plus a couple of later titles and mixes them together with brand new content.
Featuring both new and remastered versions of stages from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD, Sonic Mania sees players controlling the fastest hedgehog alive as well as his trusty companions Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles the Echidna to defeat their usual nemesis Doctor Robotnik. This new rendition of the classics is certainly in safe hands, with development being led by Christian “Taxman” Whitehead, a programmer who has previously worked on ports of the early Sonic releases.
Sonic Mania is set for release next month on August 15th, launching on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Are you looking forward to this classic rendition of a Sonic game, or are you holding out for Sonic Forces? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
