Ubisoft have announced that their smash hit online shooter The Division will be coming to the big screen. Starring the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal (Prince of Persia, End of Watch, Brokeback Mountain) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, The Martian), The Division joins other Ubisoft products such as Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell (starring Tom Hardy), Assassin’s Creed (starring Michael Fassbender) and Ghost Recon to enter production for a game to movie adaptation. Both Gyllenhaal and Chastain will play a key role in the making of the film, using production companies Freckle Films and Nine Stories throughout the adaptation’s development.
This will be Gyllenhaal’s second time featuring in a video game movie, having previously starred in Prince of Persia: The sands of Time back in 2010. The backdrop and premise of The Division would make a well-suited transition into film, as a group of tactical soldiers enter snowy manhattan to restore order following a deadly outbreak in an action-packed pandemic. A producer and director have yet to be found for the upcoming film.
Ubisoft motion pictures is an entity that continues to grow, with plans for franchises Far Cry and Raving Rabbids also expected to start production, which will hopefully achieve the difficult task of bringing a seamless video game to movie adaptation.
