Does anyone here come from the old times of League of Legends? You know, back when AP Sion and Tristana were a thing, when people played AP Gangplank, when you saw AD bruiser Nidalee at the top lane? See, those times are long gone, but they were some of the most memorable times that I’ve spent with this game, and unfortunately in League of Legends today, you don’t seem to find many “fun” builds and playstyles like you could back in the day.
Granted, you didn’t need much mechanical skill when you played these most often called troll builds, but they were incredibly fun. The way I see it today, you aren’t really allowed to experiment much in League of Legends as you could before, and that makes me sad. You could try all sorts of things back in season 2 or season 3, like bruiser Leona top, or on-hit Fizz with Trinity Force which I played non-stop just because people never expected it and it presented a new way of playing Fizz which was much more fun than the typical AP build that you would go on him. I will admit that some of these builds had little counterplay, but hey, you can’t have everything.
There are still people today that experiment with the meta and look for all kinds of crazy builds, but compared to how crazy the meta was once, it just isn’t the same. People would pick Pantheon and Sion bot and would just stunlock whoever they faced in the bottom lane and then blow them up in one combo. Or you would see full AP Sona in the mid lane casually farming while her laner is staying back at the turret, as her Q would deal immense amounts of damage and it had a rather short cooldown so you could just poke your enemy and heal up with your W.
It’s probably for the best that LoL evolved into a game that it is today, but I still think that the first couple of seasons where definitely the best, as they were so quirky and random that you just enjoyed every game that you’ve played, and people just played the game because they enjoy it, and not because they want to win.
