Yesterday, Square Enix teased that a big announcement was coming. Many wondered if it would be about Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, or one of their other franchises. Sure enough, something was announced, but not what you might have expected. Because Square Enix revealed that they’re now teaming up with Marvel for multiple games, the first one being an Avengers title
While you can see the teaser trailer below, it’s clear that the game is still in the early stages, and a posting on the Youtube page for the trailer revealed that this title, and the others in the Square Enix/Marvel roster won’t be revealed until 2018. Thus, we have a while to wait.
BUT, that’s not stopping us from wondering what kind of game it could be. Right? It’s funny when you consider that the Avengers proper actually haven’t had many pure games that have focused on them. Rather, you see them in fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom, or in ensemble games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, or Marvel Heroes. Yet here, it’s clearly something more focused.
Ironically, there was a game being developed by the now defunct THQ via an Australian studio that was working on an Avengers title that would have you play in the first person as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, or Hulk, but that game was later scrapped.
What make this arguably the most intriguing though, is that the game will be made by the Crystal Dynamics crew of Square Enix, who are the masterminds behind the very successful Lara Croft aka Tomb Raider reboot. If they can bring that quality to an Avengers title? We’ll be in good hands.
