While its true that video games are made for money, exposure, and potentially fame, a secret goal is to be revered as a game that’s so good that it’s noted to be one of the best games of the year. For Nintendo, they themselves are in a very interesting situation. Why? Well, because they have not one, but two titles that fall into Game of the Year criteria. And this isn’t just a fan thought, this is a critically noted belief. Those titles are Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the recently released Super Mario Odyssey.
These two games have been loved by critics, both getting a 97 metacritic rating, and fans are loving it too! Now, while various websites and other outlets will vote on who will win, what about the fans? How can they let Nintendo and the world know what they think is Game of the Year? Well, it’s simple, Splatfest!
That’s right, put them against each other in a Splatoon 2 Splatfest. This idea actually comes from Redditor Bankai2017, and it’s a brilliant one. Splatoon 2 is another popular Nintendo title that came out this year and using it to boost both Odyssey and Breath of the Wild’s status is magnificent! But also, it’ll promote Splatoon 2 as well!
The Splatfests are Nintendo’s way of keeping Splatoon 2 fresh in the best way, and as they do one every month, it’s a perfect idea, as usually Game of the Year is determined in December. So instead of a Christmas themed event, do Mario Odyssey vs. Breath of the Wild! It’d be fun to see not just who wins, but how evenly divided the teams would be, because we think it would be VERY close.
Even if Nintendo doesn’t do this, fans and critics are already talking about the GOTY war that’s now upon us.Who will win? Who will claim the coveted award the most? We’ll have to wait and see.
