Warframe is a free-to-play sci-fi shooter from the folks over at Digital Extremes. It is a game which is constantly in beta and thus is always changing. The Warframe player community is growing larger on a whole, but as we’ve spoken about before, there is a drop-off point where players seem to leave. A recent post on the Warframe forums suggested that players need more endgame content to keep them engaged, and it sparked up a bit of a discussion on what that content could be.
The OP, RetiredEdgeLord, is “Getting somewhat bored already with the shooting and grinding,” and offers up the idea of a mass-scale war which players can join, featuring all the factions present in-game. That includes all the syndicates, the Grineer, Corpus, and the Corrupted. The OP suggests that players could create a “strike team that we could create, customize, and send out to missions,” or bring them along if we want to do some of the dirty work ourselves. RetiredEdgeLord admits a little further down in the thread that they are looking for an experience more akin to Eve Online, where players and clans could set their sights on entire planets to take hold of and sort of manage. Now maybe that sounds good to some of you, but personally, I couldn’t be more bored.
First and foremost, as one commenter on the post pointed out, there is already an all-out war going on, but it’s confined to Invasion missions because it’s simply not the focus of the player character. Secondly, Warframe is about being on the ground in the middle of a conflict with other players by your side, blasting through enemy forces. Adding a sort of micro-management system of deploying strike forces and maintaining a power balance may be fun for some players, but I believe the vast majority would just ignore the feature all together if there’s no real reward other than your reputation as a player or clan. So, instead of micro-managing, why don’t we focus in on an idea from the Game Director for Digital Extremes, Steve Sinclair.
The video you’re seeing was from Sinclair’s personal Twitch channel and then ripped to Youtube by man you probably hear in the background. The video shows Sinclair’s very rough demo of a new mission type in which a large number of players could participate in destroying and boarding an enemy ship. If you want a war, why not get in on the ground floor and really make things happen!?
Alternatively, why not make this part of a raid in-game like the Law of Retribution or the Jordas Verdict. It seems that people forget about the raids when they’re listing off end-game content, and this “space pirate” mission type would be the perfect addition to a brand new clan-centric raid. Let’s first say that in order to unlock this space pirate raid, a clan must contribute a massive amount of resources into building the ship. In this ship, as Sinclair stated, each clan member would have a role as a pilot, an engineer, or what have you. The first stage of the raid could be to make it through enemy lines in glorious space combat, either with gunmen in the ship or archwing fighters. The second stage would be to make it to the large enemy ship, damage its defences, and board it. The third stage would be some form of boss fight, the nature of which would depend heavily on the faction you’re at war with, but I vote Corpus.
Alas, this is merely an idea and with the way DE works, it could be years before we see anything like this in-game. Until then, I suppose endgamers will have to settle for pre-existing raids, sorties, and fashion frame. But what do you think? Do you like Sinclair’s Space Pirate idea?
