You’d think that being a super successful video game would be enough of a reason to keep things simple and on the path that made the game a hit in the first place. But for Riot Games and their MOBA League of Legends, they’ve decided to break the mold in many ways. As they note on their newest blog post, there was a time when they listed out the things they would and wouldn’t do, but with the new year came new desires and perspectives.
Through that desire and perspective came a new idea for a game mode, one that was far different from anything League of Legends had ever done before. Yet, it was something that the team could get behind. This was how Dark Star: Singularity was born. But there were a lot of challenges that came with trying to create the mode and make it fun. So, the team decided to give you a behind-the-scenes look at its creation.
From a design aspect, the Riot Games team had to drop the “any champion can play this” motif that had guided them for a long time. So, they decided to pick Thresh and literally build a mode around him. Why him? Well, they liked his “kinetic” abilities and felt they would be a good basis for what they had in mind. Once they had a good idea of how the mode would play, the map layout was next. For that’s just as important in a mode like this. It took a while, but they eventually nailed the look for the layout of the map.
Finally, the art. Once the map layout had been confirmed, they needed to then build the map and make it look like it belonged. They worked hard on the terrain look, the background look, how the singularity itself looked. A true back-and-forth effort until they finally got their desired art style.
So, what do you think? Was this look at how a League of Legends mode was born informative? Did you enjoy this special game mode? Let us know in the comments below.
