Los Angeles, California is undoubtedly one of the most famous and recognized cities in the world, so it’s no surprise to see the location adding another LA-based Overwatch League team for the competition’s inaugural season. This team will be known as the Los Angeles Valiant, who’s “gold-winged helmet represents both aggressiveness and protectiveness,” which are values they hope to impose whilst working alongside fellow LA outfit, Immortals.
Immortals CEO Noah Whinston commented:
We’re thrilled to unveil the Valiant, L.A.’s newest professional franchise. The opportunity to build a new sporting brand in the entertainment capital of the world is one we do not take lightly, and we thought long and hard about brand elements that would connect our Overwatch League franchise to the core values of Immortals, and to this iconic city.
The Overwatch League was announced by Blizzard back at Blizzcon 2016, with the aim of evolving the world of esports as their goal. Releasing back in May 2016, Overwatch was clearly made to be something special on the esports scene, and has since garnered a huge following of over 35 million players around the world.
The Overwatch League will launch in December for pre-season play, and will represent the first major global esports league that buids on the local franchise model that we see with traditional sports. The league, which has teams based in the US, China, Europe and South Korea, will get underway on December 6th, 2017, starting things off with exhibition matches before the regular season begins on January 10th, 2018, running through to June, with the playoffs kicking off in July.
