Johnny Depp Bringing The Secret World To TV

At first glance, you’d think that video games being translated to television and movies would be a great idea. After all, the story, characters, and worlds are already there, they just have to adapt them, more-or-less. Right? Well, as history has proven, that’s not always the case. For every good film or show featuring video game characters, there are a plethora of others that have failed miserably. And yet, Hollywood still wants to try and make them successes. The latest one to get the call-up? The Secret World. But it’s who’s behind this adaptation that’ll have people curious.

How so? Well, it’s Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp. As Deadline reveals, his company Infinitum Nihil is teaming up with G4C Innovation’s Gudrun Giddings to make a TV show based on The Secret World. For those who are unaware, The Secret World (and it’s remake Secret World Legends) is an MMORPG that has had relative success over the years, including a reboot of the game in Legends.

Now, while TV and movies sometimes have a hard time grasping what made these games special, The Secret World could (could…) be different. As the game focuses on a team of agents on our Earth who fight against secret groups that are vying for control. Mainly, the Illuminati, Dragon and the Templar. There are supernatural elements, conspiracies, real-life drama, and more, which is why this could work as a series.

The Secret World is the ideal gaming experience to translate into a live-action episodic adventure,” said showrunner Pam Veasey.

Could this work? Absolutely, the story is grounded, the characters in the game (that will likely star in the show) are all very deep, and if translated well, it could be something special. We’ll just have to wait and see though if this becomes a beacon for future video game adaptations, or another failure we don’t like to talk about.

But if you don’t like Nintendo, you’re going down! lol
