The sci-fi third-person shooter, Warframe, recently released a new playable character and quest which we covered extensively. The bard-frame Octavia has been out long enough now that people are starting to get a good feel for her abilities and a discussion has begun about her on the Warframe forums. The post, titled “Is Octavia the New Master Race?” highlights all of the frame’s attributes and claims that she “literally can do anything.” The comments underneath the original post, however, are somewhat mixed.
For those that might not know, Octavia is a sound-based frame who can buff herself and allies, deal damage to enemies, and even go invisible through her abilities. She does, indeed, seem to be able to do everything. But does she do everything well? Some commenters don’t seem to think so.
Now, I am by no means a “min/maxer”. I get most of my builds from friends or online and then tweak them slightly to fit my personal play style. I know that Octavia can be built for any number of things and is mostly pretty well balanced, but when I saw one comment in particular I couldn’t help but think of another frame. It says: “jack of all trades, master of none. While useful, she won’t replace inaros or nidus for me, and not ivara either. Ivara + infiltrate = spy queen.”
It’s the term “Jack of all trades” that really got me. That’s the same thing people call Oberon, who we just recently talked about here at MMOexaminer when people thought he desperately needed a rework. While there seems to be a small fraction of the community who loves Oberon and his abilities, most people find that he does too many things and none of them particularly well.
The same argument seems to be coming to the Octavia forum post. People claim that Loki, Vauban, Ember, and Inaros all do one or more of her roles better than she does. Does this make her any less valuable as a teammate? I’m honestly not quite sure. What do you think? Is it better to have balanced frames or do you prefer a frame with a more decisive role?
