Of the many Nintendo franchises, there are those that are superstars, like Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon. There are those that people really enjoy playing, like Donkey Kong, Metroid, Mario Kart, etc. And then, there are ones that are just darn good games, like Pikmin. The Pikmin franchise was born in the mind of legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto out of his love of gardening. Since its release on Nintendo Gamecube, the series has gotten quite a following. And now, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Hey! Pikmin on Nintendo 3DS.

What makes Hey! Pikmin so special isn’t just that this is the games first foray onto the 3DS (or any handheld system). It’s that this is more of a 2D side-scrolling adventure than an RTS title like the original three games were. The title however does star the legendary Captain Olimar, who once again finds himself crash landing on a planet, one that once again is filed with Pikmin. GameXplain actually did a massive preview for the game since it’s coming out in just a few weeks.

As you can see, players will still be using the Pikmin to get the job done. In this case, that means exploring this mysterious planet and finding the materials you need to repair your ship so you can get off it. But to do that, you must think of how to use the Pikmin in not just combat, but in this 2D world space.

Hey! Pikmin uses the world in more of a platformer sense, and that’s apparent in the video when Olimar has to throw his Pikmin onto another level in order to get things. But don’t worry, you’ll still be fighting monsters with them too. The game is set to release on the 3DS July 28th.
