Video games franchises and titles in media other than video games haven’t always had the best of luck. There’s a lot of appeal in them, but its often hard to make them work. Yet, every once in a while we get a look at something that at the very least looks promising. That is definitely the case for the upcoming Netflix anime series Castlevania, based on the popular 2D sidescrolling game.

The first trailer has been released for it, and you can watch it below. Right off the bat you get a true sense of nostalgia as you see the NES in full view and the original Castlevania game being loaded into it. Once you get into the actual trailer, you see that it not only has some very striking imagery (not the least of which is the impaled bodies meant to represent Dracula’s inspiration, Vlad the Impaler) but the classic Belmont whip, and a lot of blood in the mix as well.

This Castlevania series is going to be a seasonal show, with season one having 4 30-minute episodes in it. It’s unclear how this will all work out, but thanks to the trailer we do know it’s coming July 7th.

True to Castlevania form, the series will follow the line of Belmonts whose sworn duty it is to kill Dracula and save the world. In this case though, we follow “the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.”

So yeah, a lot going on here. Are you excited for this new take on Castlevania? Let us know in the comments below.
