The Battle of the Mages Voting Gauntlet in Fire Emblem: Heroes has concluded, and the victor is… Tharja!

For anyone unaware of the details, Voting Gauntlets are essentially popularity contests among eight characters from the Fire Emblem universe. The eight characters are placed in a three-round, tournament-styled bracket. Each Voting Gauntlet focuses on a specific type of unit. For example, the Battle of the Mages was, as the name would suggest, for mages. The eight participants were Linde, Tharja, Sanaki, Julia, Leo, Henry, Robin, and Merric. Players must first select a character to support and then compete in special 3 vs. 3 battles to cast votes for their candidate. After each round, characters with more votes than their opponents will progress onwards in the tournament.

That being said, Tharja’s victory is unsurprising because of her popularity among fans of the Fire Emblem series. Even prior to the beginning of the Voting Gauntlet, Tharja was the clear favorite. However, what was surprisingly was how close the final round was. Reviewing the previous two Voting Gauntlets shows that both Lucina and Camilla won in what can only be described as total massacres. Tharja’s popularity rivals that of both Lucina’s and Camilla’s, so what was the driving factor leading to an epic finale?

In contrast to previous Voting Gauntlets, the Battle of the Mages incorporated a unique feature that provided underdogs with an opportunity to succeed. Once a character managed to pull ahead in votes by at least 10%, all votes for the losing candidate would be tripled for an hour. The result was a much closer and intense Voting Gauntlet than ever before. However, especially towards the beginning of the event, this new addition was very controversial. It appeared that whichever character had the losing bonus last (as in right before the round ended) would be victorious. Whether Intelligent Systems, the company in charge of Fire Emblem: Heroes, decides to modify the losing bonus or remove it completely is left to be determined.

Even if Tharja wasn’t your first choice, all Fire Emblem: Heroes players, including those that didn’t even participate in the Voting Gauntlet, will receive 20 Orbs, 5 of each Great Badge, and 5,000 Universal Crystals each because the total number of votes exceeded 10 billion.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Voting Gauntlet with plenty of spoils, and good luck to all in the next one!
