Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star Launches Jan. 17th

The PlayStation Blog is used by Sony and the developers that work for them to showcase games both big and small, regardless of whether they come out on PS4, or the PS Vita. Thus is the case for Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star, which will release on PS4 and PS Vita next week on the 17th.

So, what is the game? Well, it’s a battlefield action game set in the Fate universe (hence the name of the game). Here though, the spirits of historical and mythical figures come together to fight. So for example, if you’ve wondered about Alexander the Great, and thought “could he beat Lu Bu?” then this game is for you. But also, if you’re wanting to control a mythical being like Medusa, Fate will be right up your alley.

The team notes that the biggest challenge for the game coming to the US wasn’t making sure the game was polished graphically, or that the game was flawless in gameplay. Rather, they needed about 10 months to translate the very lengthy script from Japanese to English. Apparently, Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star, has a very robust and elegant narrative. Thus, the team wanted to make sure it was as perfectly translated as possible.

Not only that, but the game is a bit odd at times. One character, Artoria, has easily the weirdest unlock conditions ever. Thus, they made a video about unlocking her that you can watch above. Also, the games characters may not exactly look like their namesakes, but don’t be mad, it’s just their take on them.

So, if you’re ready to mix history, mythology, a robust set of characters, and a JRPG style story, then you’re going to want to check out Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star when it arrives next week on the PS4 and PS Vita.
