Within each of the three major publishers (Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony) of video games there are internal development teams, ones that makes exclusive games for the publishers they’re tied to. Over time, these developers get a reputation because of the games they make. For Nintendo, one of their best internal teams is Retro Studios. This Texas-based team are the ones who made the original Metroid Prime games, which is how they got their fame. Then, they made Donkey Kong Country Returns and its sequel Tropical Freeze. Since then though, the studio has been pretty quiet.
This is typical for Retro, as they are a very secretive group, especially since they’re paired with Nintendo. But after E3, more and more fans are wondering what is going on with them. Take for example Reddit user UselessHumanBean, who notes that a certain reveal really casts suspicion on what they’re doing:
“But now we’re in the strange parallel dimension where Metroid Prime 4 IS happening, but it’s not being made by Retro. Which begs the question, what are they cooking up right now?”
It’s a fair question. We know they are working on something, but what? Could it be a new IP? Could they do what they did with Metroid and bring a modern/new look to a classic IP? Or, like UselessHumanBeing hopes, are they making a third Donkey Kong game?
DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze were really great games on the Wii and Wii U. And DKC Returns even got a 3DS port later on. And they did make 3 Metroid games, so maybe they’re keeping the trend going with another Donkey Kong title?
It’s honestly really hard to speculate, because we’ve only had one tease, and it was a picture of a prime rib. Really hard to interpret that. But hopefully Retro Studios will reveal all to everyone soon.
