Captain Atom, a name that you may not know per se, has had one of the more interesting journeys to the modern age of comic. He was created by Charlton, along with other characters like Blue Beetle and Question. His character was so inspiring to some, that Alan Moore actually used Captain Atom to build the basis of his character Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen. That’s right, Captain Atom came BEFORE Watchmen, not after. However, Watchmen helped the character grow in popularity, and thus became a part of the Justice League and other groups after Watchmen became a hit. But, it did come at a cost.
While some interpretations had the character as a simple solider who suffered an accident, and now uses his powers to help the world, other versions, like the DC Comics New 52 version, resemble Dr. Manhattan more Captain Atom.
But now, the team of Cary Bates and Greg Weisman, who actually wrote Captain Atom comics in the 80’s along with DC stalwart Will Conrad, are aiming to bring back the “old” Captain Atom via a new comic miniseries called “The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom.” The second issue of which is coming out today.
Here’s the synopsis for the comic:
“Past Imperfect” part 2! An overload in the quantum field forced Nathaniel Adam back to the 1990s, leaving him stranded. With no powers and no clear way to get home, he wonders how his presence in the past might affect his future. But if he gets his wish…will that future include Captain Atom?
