In what is now a 3-part series, we have been taking a closer look at The Elder Scrolls Online expansion, Morrowind, and seeing just how closely it resembles the original 2002 game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The idea stemmed from a post on the official website where the developers talked about bringing the old game back to life, but we’ve gone much more in-depth with it here. Previously, we looked at Seyda Neen and Balmora. Today, we’re taking a look at the important Vivec City and how it has changed from one game to the other.
First and foremost, we can take a look at Vivec City’s entrance, so to speak. Since the events of The Elder Scrolls Online take place before the events of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, parts of the city are still being built, reflected in the image you see to the left. It’s actually quite interesting to see the origins of such a well-known city in the Elder Scrolls universe.
The interiors of buildings in Vivec City have undergone quite a bit of beautifying in The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind. While the layouts have remained the same, the actual look of the floors, walls, and ceilings have all been completely changed. It seems much more open and light than in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and though the layout is still confusing, getting lost is considerably less common with the addition of quest markers and waypoints.
Perhaps one of the most interesting comparisons from a lore nerd’s perspective is that of the moonlet that hovers above the city. In The Elder Scrolls Online, it is simply a large rock in the sky that the Living God Vivec keeps suspended by sheer force of will. In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, however, the rock has been turned into what is known as the Ministry of Truth – a maximum security prison for the lowest criminals in Morrowind.
Next, comes the city’s main focal point: Vivec’s Palace. The basic idea of the palace remained the same in both games, though the Elder Scrolls Online version is certainly more detailed with its decorations. The entranceway is somewhat different as well, with the Morrowind variation sporting some spikes on either side of the door.
Inside the palace is a different story entirely. In The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind, Vivec resides in a bright, beautiful room with a mosaic ceiling and brightly colored banners on the walls. It is truly a room fit for a Living God and it certainly leaves an impression on anyone who enters. In the original 2002 game, Vivec’s palace is almost dungeon-like in its design – dark and hardly decorated.
Overall, I find that The Elder Scrolls Online’s Vivec City rests somewhere in between Seyda Neen and Balmora in terms of its similarities to the original game. There are definitely areas of the city which are unmistakably taken directly from The Elder Scrolls III, but there are others that entirely different. Like Balmora, though, these changes are for the better as they improve the overall look of Vivec City. Things are much cheerier and more detailed in the current game, and that’s just fine by me.
