Video games often have trends, and many times games will mimic what others have done in other titles if they feel that it could help them in one fashion or another. This is especially true when money is involved, because any excuse to make a little extra money is usually taken and thus added to the game. One of the most recent trends that give money to the developers is Loot Boxes. While they started off as a simple thing, they’ve grown to be in numerous online games, including MMORPGs like Elder Scrolls Online, and its that community that has an interesting thought on Loot Boxes in general.
Loot Boxes have been referred to recently as “online gambling,” because people will spend money on a Loot Box and have no idea what they’re going to get. It’s a true mystery as it’s random, just like gambling. And players will throw many at it trying to get a rare or legendary item. And if they don’t get it, people will complain.
For Reddit user and Elder Scrolls Online player jlaw54, he sees the real problem in Loot Boxes: the gamers.
“I feel like railing against loot boxes 📦 is great, IF you have never, or something close to that value, purchased them. If you purchase them and complain….well…..”
It’s an interesting statement, and he is right. The only reason Loot Boxes have gotten so pervasive in the gaming world is because players by them in the first place. Some buy them in bulk because they want certain things, and each purchase cements that Loot Boxes work, and that they will make money.
Many others on the Elder Scrolls Online Reddit forum agree with him, some even hate Loot Boxes more than him. While others think that though he’s right, it won’t change things unless the whole gaming community stops buying them. Which at present, is very unlikely
