Riot has released details on the newest champion to hit the rift in League of Legends. Known as Kayn and nicknamed The Shadow Reaper, the upcoming champion introduces some new and unusual mechanics into the game through his passive and skills.
Shieda Kayn, The Shadow Reaper
Kayn is full of unique mechanics, including the ability to enter enemy champions and temporarily pass through walls. But perhaps the most unusual aspect of this new champion is that he begins every game with an internal struggle that can change what he becomes later. Kayn wields an ancient weapon inhabited by a darkin named Rhaast. The two are in a battle for Kayn’s body, and both need to be fed by the souls of the fallen.
Once a player has accumulated enough of that “food,” they can transform, ending the battle within and unlocking Kayn’s true powers. If Kayn wins, and he becomes a slippery shadow assassin capable of high amounts of burst damage. If Rhaast wins, Kayn gains crowd control and more sustain. That means Kayn players can choose mid-game between two different types of classes to play out the rest of the match.
This certainly corresponds to the statement from the MOBA’s Lead Producer Reav3, when he said that the next champion will be able to transform, and do so in a way the team has never tried before. With his interesting new mechanic, Kayn seems poised to dive right into the meta as the ultimate jungle flex pick. Even once he’s locked in, the enemy team can’t really be sure if they’ll be looking at a high DPS squishy, or a tanky CC front liner.
For the full details on the champion, head to the announcement on the League of Legends website. There’s some foreboding quotes from both Kayn and Rhaast, and a complete breakdown of Kayn’s skill kit.
