A mysterious countdown timer has surfaced on the official website for Duke Nukem, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The timer is set to finish on September 2nd, prompting massive rumours that a new Duke Nukem game will be announced when the countdown reaches zero.
These rumours have also been fuelled by a recent Reddit post in which a user claims they have had information on the game revealed to them. According to user Tezla55, the game will be entitled Duke Nukem 3D: World tour, and will feature both original and new content from the original Duke Nukem 3D game. The post also suggests the possibility of both co-op and online deathmatch modes, as well as a recently deleted Twitter link boasting the name “DukeWorldTour” also adding fuel to the fire.
All signs are pointing to a remake of Duke Nukem 3D for the moment, which would seem like a safe option given the reception of the last time a new Duke game came to light. Making its way out of developmental hell after 15 years, 2011’s Duke Nukem Forever was critically disappointing, receiving predominantly negative reviews. Often referred to as one of the most disappointing games of that year, the sequel was criticised for its clunky mechanics, loading times and its dated design.
