The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a first for the series in many ways. It was the first of the series to truly have an open world, one where you could pick and choose what you wanted to do and when you wanted to do it. It was also one that had a story that could be expanded upon via sidequests instead of being a natural part of the game. Furthermore, as Nintendo would reveal, it was the first ever Zelda game to receive DLC content, the first of which is out now.
Breath of the Wild will have two DLC packs, and part one, called The Master Trials, is available now for purchase. The hook of this DLC is the titular Master Trials. In this special mode, Link will have to battle through numerous threats wielding a variety of weapons (and sometimes not having a weapon at all), all the while not dying. If you do happen to die, you’ll have to start the test over again. Should you succeed in the Master Trials, the Master Sword will have its power fully unlocked. This means you can wield it throughout the game without the need for it to recharge.
But that’s not the only addition. The Master Trials DLC also adds an all-new Hard Mode. This promises to truly test your skills, as all monsters and bosses are ranked up in difficulty. There’s also new gameplay mechanics like the Traveler’s Medallion, where you can create a special waypoint to teleport to at any time. Or the Hero’s Path, where you can trace where Link has been for up to 200 hours of gameplay time.
Finally, there are new masks and armors for Link to get and wear. Many of these even have special abilities for you to use. The Breath of the Wild DLC is only available via the Expansion Pass, which is $19.99.
