When it comes to the development of MMO titles, there is often (understandably) a large team behind creating a product of such magnitude. Final Fantasy XIV is no exception to this rule, and it has recently been revealed just how big the team behind the scenes actually is.
Through the platforms of Youtube and Reddit, we have learned that there have been a number of changes throughout the game’s life cycle. The team has changed immensely over this period, with new staff being recruited on a continuous basis. At its largest, the staff numbers stood at just over 300 during patch 2.0, though almost 600 unique names appear on the credits across all of the patches.
In comparison to other games within the genre, World of Warcraft’s development staff numbers peaked at 235 in June last year, whilst The Elder Scrolls Online stood at 250 before launch. Both Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic come in at just short of 300, emphasizing the sheer size of the teams required to make games such as these.
As of patch 3.56, the FFXIV dev team hosts around 264 in-house members. As you can see from those numbers, they are very close to, and in some instances greater than, the number of staff of big hitters in the MMO industry such as World of Warcraft. Even the boss design team has seen some growth, going from five members up to eight since patch 3.56 was introduced. Going forward, the team is constantly hiring and alternating its staff to bring fans the best possible product.
