World Of Warcraft is one of the longest-running and most popular MMORPGs of all time, and one of the reasons it’s done so well is because of its growth. Not just because of how it adds new content and quests, but because of the scale of its expansions. Yet, in recent expansions, it felt as though Blizzard was just bringing in a new “major threat”. The Lich King, Deathwing, the Burning Legion, etc., and fans were growing tired of it. But now, the next one is perfect representation of what the game needs to be right now. For Battle For Azeroth is epic.
Why is it so epic? Because quite simply it goes back to the basics that set World of Warcraft apart from so many. This is a world that is technically divided in two. There’s the Alliance, and there’s the Horde. In the early days of the game, loyalties were determined depending on which side you were on, and it was a big debate about whether you were on the side of the Horde or the Alliance.
With Battle For Azeroth, their war is put back on the forefront, with both sides now desperately wanting to defeat the other, and seeking new means to make that happen. This is also significant because we get to see how much these two factions have evolved since the earliest days of World of Warcraft. One of the biggest things that happened in the Legion expansion was the death of the Alliance leader, and here, we get to see his son in full action trying to lay waste to their true eternal foe of the Horde. That’s progression, and it’s beautiful.
And of course, the expansion is going to feature new places to go, people to meet, and new twists on the classic races of Azeroth. But at its core, Battle For Azeroth is about rekindling the greatest rivalry of them all, and that’s why this is the perfect expansion for the game.
