Atari are without a doubt one of the companies that played one of the most pivotal roles in shaping the video gaming industry. Making their name between the 1970s through to the late eighties, bringing tech such as the Atari 2600 and groundbreaking games such as Pong, Atari had a huge influence on creating the foundations of gaming that we know today.
Despite that, Atari haven’t released a console of their own in over two decades. Until now it appears, after Atari CEO Fred Chesnais stated in a recent interview during E3 2017 that they would be making a surprising return to the console market, being quoted as saying “We’re back in the hardware business,” and will be bringing a “brand new Atari product years in the making.”
The company teased a brand new product last week with the name “Ataribox”, though understandably many believed that it was indeed fake. Fred Chesnais has stated that the console’s design is very much in its early stages, and that more information regarding the console would be revealed at a later date.
It will be interesting to see in what capacity Atari will compete at when the Ataribox is launched. Given the dominance of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as the recent release of the Nintendo Switch, many will be curious as to how well it will do, and what products it will be releasing. The console is based on PC tech according to reports, so its bound to have some power behind it at the very least.
