2017 is over, but what a year it was for gaming, huh? Two consoles were released in the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox One X. VR got a much stronger foothold in the industry, mobile and handheld games continued to shine and evolve, and every company put out major titles on their platforms that made 2017 one of the best gaming years in recent memory. But, as always, we have to determine who was the best of them all. But how to do that? Well…how about in Amazon sales?
After all, Amazon is one of the largest and most popular websites on the Internet, and people go there all the time to buy stuff, including video games! So, the site decided to reveal how 2017 was for them sales wise. Needless to say, a LOT of video game items were best-sellers and not just games, but cards for things like the PlayStation Store, controllers, and more made the list. But for this, we’re focusing solely on video game titles that sold the most on the site.
Topping the list was Super Mario Odyssey, which is impressive for many reasons, not the least of which was that it was released a few days before November. Which means, that between pre-orders and sales after release, it beat every game that came before it (all 10 months) and after it. That’s no small feat.
Also not a small feat is the fact that Nintendo absolutely dominated the sales list. As seven of the top ten slots belonged to them, and not just in Switch games, as Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon also made the list. The only non-Nintendo games were Call of Duty: WWII (one slot for PS4 and one slot for Xbox One) and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Given that much of 2018 is up in the air in terms of release dates, it’ll be fun to see how the new years list shapes up.
