Nintendo has revealed the official age rating for the highly anticipated release Super Mario Odyssey, and it may come as a surprise to some.
The rating will be E10+, which means that it isn’t recommended for children who are under the age of 10. This makes Super Mario Odyssey the first mainline Mario game that has not been deemed suitable for all ages, which has lead to many fans questioning the game’s content prior to its release.
There has been no other further information available from Nintendo, other than the classification appearing on the official Super Mario Odyssey page on the Nintendo website. Theories going around as to why this has been given this rating revolve around New Donk City being included in the game, which features a far more realistic setting than usually found in Mario games, featuring humans, cars, skyscrapers and such which might be deemed less suitable for children. Amongst the many ideas, there is a bit of a hint from the Australian classification for the game, which lists mild violence and themes for the reason as to why it has been given a PG rating in that region.
So perhaps Super Mario Odyssey brings a slightly darker than usual experience for everyone’s favorite plumber. What we do know is that the game will release on the Nintendo Switch on October 27th, 2017 and will be the first main Mario game to come to the new console.
