Steam Early Access is a great tool for indie game developers. It allows them to show off their game with it not fully complete, then players can help refine it before the release. Many styles of game have done just that, but now an action RPG that is meant to bring the old ways of video games back has arrived on the service. The game is called Goken, and it’s meant to bring joy, pain, nostalgia, and fun.
Long ago, there was a swordsman who was given a gift by the god of the world. The gift was five powerful swords. These swords were used by the swordsman to bring peace to the world he lived in, and he was grateful. But one day, as he went to go praise the god who gave him the gift, the swords came to life and started attacking the god. Furious, the god locked away the swordsman on top of a mountain, and his swords were lost. 5000 years later, you have to go get them back.
Goken is meant to fell like an old-school RPG game, even maintaining the classic “quarter view” that many were known for. However, the team does move the camera around to help show off certain events. What’s more, they wanted to make the whole game as seamless as possible, even in combat transitions.
You’ll have to be strategic in battles, and to help with that, Goken allows you to use two different weapons, each assigned to a different button. Using the right weapon for the right battle could be the difference between life and death. The other way to make your character unique is through tattoos. In the game, you use these inks to build up your power, HP, learn special moves and more! So put the ink you think is best, and see how well your character does.
The game is live on Early Access right now, go try it out, and see if you can help make it better.
