When making a game, it’s important to have a certain sense of style. Whether that be through gameplay or visuals, it’s an important thing to revolve your game around, as it’ll help you make the game unique. That is definitely the case with a new Kickstarter video game project known as Narita Boy.
Narita Boy is a “retro futuristic” game that is both 2D side scroller, as well as RPG. You play as Narita Boy, a legendary digital hero that is put on a quest that will take him through several dimensions. The digital kingdom he lives in is under attack, and you have to save it. The catch? There’s only one weapon that can harm this threat, the Techno Sword, and you have to go get it.
The team behind the game, Studio Koba, notes that they were inspired by many games of the past, including retro pixel adventures like Castlevania, Another World, and Double Dragon. But, they were also intrigued with modern takes of the pixel genre, such as Superbrothers or Sword and Sorcery. In terms of the narrative, they wanted to pay respects to titles like Ready Player One, He-Man, and The Last Starfighter. All the while having a soundtrack that just screamed pixel game.
Narita Boy will feature handcrafted pixel sprites that offer a set of very complex animations. The game offers 2D scroller action mixed with time and dimension jump mechanics, All the while combining traditional RPG elements, amazing worlds to explore, and many interesting characters to meet along the way.
Narita Boy is asking for $127,000, and has already gotten $51,000 raised already, with 30 days left to go in its campaign. So, if you’re looking for an old school graphics in a game with some modern touches and improvements, then this game is definitely one you want to support.
