It might seem like a bit of an age-old question to some, but there is a number of fans holding out the hope that World of Warcraft could make its way onto home consoles. This is something playing on Ocalus’ mind, and given how passionate the WoW community can be on such subjects, a cautious approach was taken to avoid conjuring up the usual storm of PC versus console.

Such an established franchise making the crossover to console format would certainly be a huge transition, which many consider to be too much of one for it to ever come to fruition. There are many factors that come in to play, some of which cited by Johnwanne:

I wouldn’t imagine a controller would support the game very well, and if you’re plugging in a keyboard & mouse it’d defeat the point on being on there in the first place. Then you’ve also got player retention to consider – introducing the game this late after multiple expansions and monetisation methods, players there might not be as accepting of it as ourselves who have been used to it for ages.

It’s worth taking into account that the introduction to consoles would see a potentially massive spike in players, but the mountain to climb to make the idea possible might be too much of a stretch for the sake of a spike in its player base.

Riania replied:

Optimization / possible performance issues aside, I think it’d be weird to bring it to console at this point because there would be many expansions worth of content that wouldn’t seem all that important compared to the current legion content.

World of Warcraft coming to consoles would be massive, whether or not Blizzard would explore this option is another matter, having to consider optimization, gameplay and negotiations with the likes of Sony and Microsoft going forward to make it happen.

  1. I don’t think a lot of console players could justify paying two subs, and I feel like WoW is kind of a game that wouldn’t draw as many people on console anyway. It can play nicely on controller, but I just don’t feel like the playerbase would be there on console.

  2. It would open a market to people that can’t afford a $1500 computer to play it. Some people are still playing wow on the minimum settings.

    • This was my thought on the “keyboard and mouse defeating the purpose of playing on console”.

Pretending I didn’t have the pc I have (which isn’t much, but plays wow nicely), I do habe a ps4 also. I could have more easily justified purchasing a usb/wireless keyboard and mouse (which I already had lying around anyway) than putting the money into a whole new rig.

And to counter the previous commenters issue of paying double subscription fees, I already pay for my psplus subscription, and now also pay a Wow subscription, so that issue is already the case for any console+pc gamer, and FFIV:ART requires dual subscriptions and has no issue.

  3. Please for god sake blizzard make wow possible for ps4.
Im waiting for this since i stop playing after the lich King expension. think it was catalysm what make me stop playing.
I dont wanne go to a other game only play soccer games now but i was really close to playing final fantasy and now im thinking about neverwinter.
so please make it before you lose all wow players.

  4. I think this would be an amazing idea. I used to play WoW a lot but I cant afford a top end PC and using my laptop just didn’t cut it for the amount I was apying for my sub. I haven’t played WoW in about 3 years and have been on Xbox One for about 5 years. The idea of being able to play one of the best games I’ve played on a console that needs no improving sounds amazing and I could definitely justify starting up my subscription again. Talking to friends who also only have Xbox and no PC, they would love the opportunity to play the game. Make it happen!
