Wonder Woman is an amazing character. One of, if not the depending on who you talk to, first leading ladies in comics, she skyrocketed to popularity, and has stayed there for some time. She rose to superstar prominence during the New 52 era during its first few years. Then, she came to the big screen in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. And now, 75 years after being created, she’s getting her first solo film.
Over her 75 year run, Diana of Themyscira has been perceived in many different ways. Which led to many different origin stories. For her solo film, her origin will be visited (as she’s been in the world of man for nearly a century at the time of BVS) and they need to be true to who Diana is, else fans will go nuts…again.
In an interview with Empire, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins talked about what Diana’s motivations are in the film. According to her, they’re philosophical. Meaning, she’s not in it to “beat up the bad guys”, but rather, to truly protect a world that she wants to know, deserves to be saved, and do it for love, honor, and peace.
However, as we’re going to see, her pure views will be altered by the time the film ends. As Diana will see just how “senseless” some of this violence is. This event will no doubt turn her into the much colder version of Wonder Woman we saw in BVS, where she notes to Batman how people can’t truly be unified.
How will the film do? I’m hopeful it’ll be epic, but only time will tell. Wonder Woman arrives June 2nd, 2017.
